Neutering at Fauna Vets

Neutering for Northwood’s pets, with keyhole spays available from a visiting specialist.

Deciding whether and when to neuter your pet is a big decision, and there's no one answer that suits every pet.

When we launched Fauna Vets, our aim was a practice where we could always do what we believe is best for our patients, with no caveats or competing interests. So we'll talk you through the options, the timing and what's right for your pet – and we'll always be clear about costs.

When to neuter

Every pet is different, and we’ll always talk timing through with you. These are the guidelines we follow.

Cats

We can neuter male and female cats from three months old, as long as they weigh at least 2kg. It’s safe to spay a female cat while she’s in season.

Dogs

The right time for your dog depends on how big they’ll be when they’re fully grown.

Expected adult weight Earliest age to neuter
Under 25kg 6 months
Over 25kg 12 months
Over 35kg 18 months

Female dogs can be spayed before their first season. If she’s already had a season, we wait three to four months from the last day of her bleed before spaying. Operating sooner increases the risk of bleeding and makes the surgery take longer.

If your male dog is nervous or showing signs of aggression, neutering can sometimes make things worse. We may suggest seeing a behaviourist first, or trying a temporary chemical castration. This lets us see the effects of neutering without surgery, and it’s done while your dog is awake in a longer appointment.

Rabbits

Rabbits can be neutered any time from three months old – and as soon as possible if a male is living with a female. We usually neuter the male rather than the female, as it’s a less invasive procedure for him. If a female is showing aggression, we can neuter her too.

Not sure when’s right for your pet? Book a neutering chat and we’ll talk it through.

Keyhole surgery

Keyhole spays

We offer keyhole spays here at Fauna, carried out by a specialist endoscopic vet who comes in to do them. Keyhole surgery uses a camera and a small incision rather than a larger open incision. This means less discomfort for your pet and a quicker, more comfortable recovery.

We monitor every patient closely before, during and after every procedure, and our nurses are watching too. It means we can respond straight away to your pet’s needs and keep them comfortable and safe.

[CONFIRM: specialist’s name and practice, and whether they’re happy to be named. Is keyhole spaying for dogs only or cats too, and is there a price difference?]
