Pet travel at Fauna Vets

Getting your pet ready for their travels, from your independent, local vets in Northwood.

Whether you’re heading off on holiday together or moving abroad, getting the paperwork right is a big part of travelling with a pet.

The rules depend on where you’re going and can change, so the best thing you can do is talk to us early. We’ll help you understand what your pet needs and when.

How we can help

Animal health certificates

If you’re taking your dog, cat or ferret to an EU country, they’ll need an animal health certificate. It has to be signed by an official vet – and we complete them ourselves here in the practice, so there’s no need to go anywhere else.

You’ll need a new certificate for every trip from Great Britain to the EU. It’s valid for entry within 10 days of being issued, then covers travel between EU countries and your journey home for up to six months. One certificate can cover up to five pets.

Export health certificates

Moving abroad for good, or travelling outside the EU? Many countries need an export health certificate instead. Requirements vary a lot from one country to the next, so get in touch as soon as you know where you’re going and we’ll help you work out what your pet needs.

Microchips and rabies vaccinations

Before they travel, your pet will need a microchip and a rabies vaccination. The microchip has to go in before, or at the same time as, the rabies vaccination, and your pet must be at least 12 weeks old to be vaccinated. We can do both for you here.

Plan ahead

Give yourself plenty of time

After your pet’s first rabies vaccination, you’ll need to wait at least 21 full days before they can travel. Their animal health certificate can then only be issued within the 10 days before you arrive in the EU.

So the earlier you talk to us, the better. We’d suggest getting in touch at least 6 weeks before you go, and bringing your pet’s vaccination records and microchip details to your certificate appointment.

If you live in England, you can’t use a pet passport to enter the EU – even one issued in an EU country. Pet travel rules can change, so we’ll always check the latest guidance with you before you go.

Comfort and care

Calm from the moment you arrive

Our practice has been carefully designed to make every visit as smooth and stress-free as possible. We are always clear about options and costs, and we talk things through so you know exactly what your pet needs and why.
