Frequently asked questions

What is the CMA, and why are vets now publishing price lists?

The CMA is the Competition and Markets Authority – the UK’s competition regulator. After looking into vet services across the country, it brought in new rules, the Veterinary Services Market Investigation Order 2026, which ask every vet practice to publish a price list in the same set format. The aim is to make it easier for pet owners to see what common treatments cost.

Why do you only show some of your prices here?

The prices on this page are the items the CMA asks every vet practice to publish, using the CMA’s own name for each one. A full list of everything we do at Fauna Vets would run to thousands of items, which wouldn’t be much help to anyone. If you’d like to know the price of something that isn’t listed, just give us a ring on 01923 881633 and we’ll talk it through.

Is the price on this page what I’ll pay for my pet?

The prices on our list are for a typical, straightforward case. Every pet is different, so for some cases and some services the price can vary depending on your pet’s needs and any clinical factors. Whenever we recommend treatment, we’ll always give you a full quote first – so you know exactly what we’re recommending, why and what it costs before anything goes ahead.

Will you tell me if the cost changes during treatment?

Yes. If anything changes once treatment has started, we’ll phone you to talk it through – even if your pet is in the middle of a procedure. Sometimes a vet finds something that wasn’t clear beforehand, and it may mean your pet needs extra or different treatment. We’ll explain what we’ve found, what your options are and what each one costs, so you can decide what’s best for your pet.

Is the x-ray price the same for every pet?

No. The CMA asks every practice to list x-rays as a single price, but the real cost depends on which part of the body we need to look at and how many views we need to take. The x-ray price on our list is based on an abdominal x-ray. If your pet needs an x-ray, we’ll explain what’s involved and give you a full quote before we go ahead.

Why is the ultrasound priced for a single organ?

The CMA’s list uses the wording “single organ” for ultrasound, so that’s the item every practice has to price. In practice, when we scan a pet at Fauna Vets, we’d usually look at the whole abdomen rather than a single organ. If you’d like the price for a full abdominal ultrasound, give our team a call on 01923 881633 and we’ll talk you through it.

How do I get a quote for my pet?

Just give us a ring on 01923 881633 for a chat. Depending on what your pet needs, we’ll either give you a quote there and then or arrange a time for you to come in and talk it through with us. And if we haven’t met you yet, you’ll always be welcomed with a comfy seat, a cuppa and a smile.

What does Fauna think about the new CMA rules?

We’re all for transparency – it’s how we’ve always worked. We are always clear about treatment options and costs, and we talk everything through so you know exactly what we’re recommending and why. The one thing a short, set list can’t show is how much some prices vary from pet to pet, so we’ve answered that here. And we go further than the rules ask – if anything isn’t included in a surgical price, we show you what it costs, not just a tick in a box.

Does Fauna Vets have a health plan?

Yes – it’s called Flora’s Healthy Pet Club. Members get unlimited consults as standard, so if something about your pet is worrying you, you can bring them in for a check without thinking twice. Your pet’s vaccinations are included too. We’ve also taken a unique approach to the plan, giving you the choice of how to access flea and worm medication. Give our team a ring on 01923 881633 or see our health plan page to find out more.
